General Information

A savory or sweet condiment originating from India, made with fruits, vegetables, and/or herbs cooked with vinegar, spices, and sometimes sugar. Comes in various flavors and textures.

Ingridients

  • 2 large ripe mangoes, peeled and pitted
  • 1 green bell pepper, roughly chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, roughly chopped
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup white onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Preparatory Steps

  • In a large pot, combine the mangoes, bell peppers, sugar, onion, and vinegar.
  • Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes, or until the mangoes are softened and the mixture thickens.
  • Stir in the ginger, turmeric, cloves, cayenne pepper, and salt.
  • Simmer for an additional 10 minutes, or until the chutney reaches desired consistency.
  • Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  • Transfer the chutney to a clean, airtight container and refrigerate for at least 24 hours before serving.
  • Enjoy your homemade mango chutney with crackers, cheese, or as a condiment for grilled meats or fish.

Tips

  • For a spicier chutney, add more cayenne pepper to taste.
  • You can also add other spices to your chutney, such as cinnamon, cardamom, or black pepper.
  • If you don’t have apple cider vinegar, you can use white vinegar or rice vinegar.
  • Be sure to use ripe mangoes for the best flavor
